George Clontz Kornegay Sr., 77, died suddenly Monday, May 19, 2008, at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Graveside services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Park with the Rev. Jerry Mitchell officiating. Military honors will follow the service.

George was born in Duplin County Oct. 7, 1930, to the late Henry Street Kornegay and Effie Lee Smith Kornegay. He served his country in the National Guard with 36 years of service and retired with the rank of major.

George retired as the central office foreman for Southern Bell Telephone Co. and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers.

George is survived by his wife of 57 years, Retha Bostic Kornegay; his son, George C. Kornegay Jr. and Sarah Winkler of Holly Ridge; his daughter, Terri Killette and Joe Grady of Goldsboro; his grandchildren, George C. "Dusty" Kornegay III and wife, Joy, of Thailand, Rebekah "Susi" Boyd and husband, Matt, of Greenville, Meredith Karcher and husband, Kyle, of Goldsboro, Jaime Wiggins and husband, Scott, of LaGrange, Lindsay Killette of Goldsboro, Shawn Winkler and Shannon Winkler of Holly Ridge; his great-grandchildren, Tucker Wiggins, Jackson Karcher, Christopher Boyd, Fisher Wiggins, Alfred Kornegay, Mason Wiggins, Fern and Thar; and his sister, Peggy Fowler of Kinston.

The family will receive friends Thursday following the graveside service at Wayne Memorial Park and other times at the home of his daughter, 135 Wheeler Drive, Goldsboro.
