GREENVILLE -- After almost 79 years of devotion and service to her Lord and family, Sallie Gail Hines Britt, has finally let her earthly body rest. She passed away peacefully, Tuesday afternoon, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital.

Sallie was born in Faison, N.C. She was the daughter of Herbert and Inez Oates Hines. She attended Faison public schools and graduated from Faison High School in 1948 where she was the valedictorian of her graduating class. She attended East Carolina Teachers College where she met Austin Hoover Britt. They married on Nov. 23, 1951. Sallie graduated with a B.S. in Home Economics from ECTC in May, 1952. Sallie devoted her life to taking care of her parents, husband and children. Between her natural talent and formal education, there was nothing she could not do. She was an excellent cook, seamstress and homemaker. She was an avid gardener, beautifying her home and yard. She was known for her large vegetable garden, which was her passion for most of her life until she developed Parkinson's disease in the past 10 years. She taught her children to love nature and all God's creatures. She lovingly cared for her family pets, Lady, Gypsy, Toby and Mother Cat. She was always there to serve anyone in need, never tiring or complaining.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Inez Oates Hines; sisters, Margaret Scott, Kathleen Hatcher, Signa Drewry, Georganna Burch and Herby Jones; nephews, David Burch, Freddy and Benny Sutton; nieces, Gail Sutton and Camille Bumgardner.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 56 years, Austin Hoover Britt; daughter, Carmen Wright and husband, Greg, and grand "cat" Tabbi; sons, Clay Britt and wife, Anita, granddaughter, Alex Britt, and Randy Britt and wife, Stephanie, grandson, Matthew Britt, all of Greenville; sisters, Karen Bumgardner of Charlotte, Melinda Sutton and Evelyn Warren, both of Faison, Gwen Jones of Goldsboro; many nieces and nephews; and special friend and caregiver, Althea Wooten.

The family would like to thank Dr. Irene Hamrick for her care and kindness since Sallie was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Also, the family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. Greg Knapp for his care and concern during these difficult last days. Also, thanks to the fine staff in South 211 and Focus Care at PCMH.
