JOSEPH M. WHITLEY

Died April 1, 1008

SNOW HILL -- Joseph Marion Whitley, 82, passed away Tuesday evening at his residence following a battle with cancer. A native of Greene County, he was born the son of Joseph M. Whitley and Hattie Ann Kearney Whitley. Mr. Whitley was a veteran of the U.S. Army and member of Fort Run PFWB Church. He had retired with R.N. Rouse and Company in Goldsboro and had also actively farmed tobacco for many years.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 5, at the chapel of Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service with the Rev. Larry Turlington officiating. Interment will follow at the Snow Hill Cemetery with military honors.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Joan Marie Whitley Heath; and a grandson, Edward Heath Jr.

His surviving family includes his wife, Vayria "Bunnie" Fields Whitley of the home; children, Linda Whitley Daniels and husband, Rufus, of Farmville, Joe Whitley and wife, Sharon, of Pikeville and Gerald Whitley of New Bern; a sister, Eula Moore of Snow Hill; stepdaughters, Sharlene Gurley Register and husband, Tommy, of Goldsboro, Tammy Gurley Tyner and husband, Dwight, of Pikeville; seven grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home and other times at the residence.
