EUGENE 'WOODY' WOODRING

Died March 20, 2008

Eugene "Woody" Woodring, 84, of 307 Dr. Donnie H. Jones Jr. Blvd., Princeton, went home to be with his Lord Thursday March 20, 2008 with his loving family by his side.

He was the son of the late William Walter and Berdine Patterson Woodring. Mr. Woodring served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1939. He started with the North Carolina Division of Highways as a field mechanic in 1948 and he retired from the NC DOT as the Division Equipment Operations Supervisor over Johnston, Wayne, Wilson, Nash, Edgecombe and Halifax counties in 1989. Mr. Woodring served as President of the North Carolina State Employees Association in 1976. He served as president of the Princeton Community Pool for eight years and was Past President of the Johnston County Democratic Men's Association. Mr. Woodring served in all offices of the Princeton Bulldog Booster Club for 26 years, and was inducted into the Princeton High School Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008. He received the "Unsung Hero" award from the North Carolina High School Athletic Association in 1996. He was a member of the Princeton Baptist Church.

Eugene "Woody" Woodring was raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason in Hiram Lodge #98 in Clinton, N.C. on March 5, 1963. He was invested with the 32nd degree Scottish Rite Masonry in Wilmington Consistory on March 28, 1963. He crossed the hot sands of Sudan Shrine Temple on May 23, 1963, and served in the wrecking crew of Sudan Temple. He is an honorary member of the St. Patrick Lodge #167 of Princeton. He was an active member of Johnston County Shrine Club and Wayne County Shrine Club.

The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday morning at the Princeton Baptist Church. Burial will follow with Full Masonic Rites at the Princeton Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ludy Westbrook Woodring; daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and Donald Best of Princeton, Tammy and David Holt of Princeton; sons and daughters-in-law, Ricky and Julie Woodring of Princeton, Tony and Sharon Woodring of Princeton; grandchildren; Hannah Best, Morgan Woodring, Noah Holt, Justin and Kelsey Woodring; brother, Rufus Woodring of Lake Toxaway. Although flowers are welcome, the family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Sudan Shriners Children's Hospital Fund P.O. Drawer 490, New Bern, N.C. 28563, or Princeton Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 215, Princeton, N.C. 27569.

The family will be receiving friends from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday at Casey Funeral Home in Princeton.
