MOUNT OLIVE -- Larry Howard, 61, of 1429 White Flash Road, died early Sunday morning at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Tyndall Funeral Home with Bishop Hugh Harper, Bishop Joseph Scott and the Rev. Linda Grider officiating. Entombment will follow in Devotional Gardens at Warsaw and will include Masonic rites.

The family will receive friends this evening at the funeral home from 7 until 9 p.m., and other times at the home.

Mr. Howard, son of the late Herbert and Lou Belle Whaley Howard, and brother of the late Leroy Howard, was retired from Carolina Telephone (which became Sprint) with 341/2 years of service. He was a member of the Albertson Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and was a member of St. John Masonic Lodge in Kenansville where he was past master. He served on the Duplin County Board of Commissioners for eight years. A charter member of the Pleasant Grove Volunteer Fire Department, he was their retired chief and was instrumental in the organization of the emergency medical services which became an additional part of the department.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Herring Howard of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jeffrey Scott Howard and Stephanie Howard of Mount Olive, Patrick Scott Howard of Mount Olive; two brothers, Herbert Elwood Howard of Albertson, L.E. "Bud" Howard of Pink Hill; and six sisters, Bessie Murvin of Kinston, Ann Herring of Albertson, Trula Meadows of Cape Carteret, Jean Outlaw of Fayetteville, Faye Davis of Kinston, Joan Bradshaw of Kinston; and a brother-in-law, D.C. "Bill" Herring of Mount Olive.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers that memorial donations be made to The ALS Foundation, Jim "Catfish" Hunter Chapter, 120-101 Penmarc Drive, Raleigh, N.C. 27603, or the Pleasant Grove Volunteer Fire Department and E.M.S., 1794 Red Hill Road, Mount Olive, N.C. 28365.
