MELVIN ETHERIDGE ANDERSON

Melvin Etheridge Anderson, 68, went to be with his Lord on Monday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Melvin was born in Johnston County to the late Mack Thel Anderson and Bettie Braswell Anderson. He was a graduate of Campbell University and also from East Carolina University. Melvin was a teacher with Wayne County Public Schools and currently was the Literacy Coach for Brogden Middle School. He was awarded Grantham School's Teacher of the Year in 2002. Melvin took great pleasure in serving his community in many ways and they included: president of the North Carolina District Exchange Clubs; vice president of the N.C. District Exchange Clubs; secretary of the N.C. District Exchange Clubs; board of directors for the Eastern Carolina Child Abuse Prevention Center; served on committee to establish the Child Abuse Prevention Center in Kinston; director for the Mount Olive Chamber of Commerce; director of the Goldsboro Chamber of Commerce; Committee of 100 for Mount Olive and Goldsboro; resident of the Mount Olive Exchange Club; treasurer of Mount Olive Exchange Club; State District club director; and chairman of St. Jude's Bike-a-Thon for several years. Melvin was the recipient of the Mount Olive Chamber of Commerce Director of the Year Award in 1984 and in 1986.
Over the years, Melvin was an active member of several churches in various towns where he was involved in the following church activities: Board of Directors; chairman of the Stewardship Committee; assistant director of Sunday school; director of Adult I and had served as Sunday school director. He was an active member of New Hope United Methodist Church.
A service to celebrate Melvin's life will be held Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at New Hope United Methodist Church with the Rev. Martin Armstrong and the Rev. Glen Burden Jr. officiating.
More than anything else, Melvin has been devoted for 42 years to his wife, Anne Brown Anderson. He is also survived by his brother, Keith Anderson and wife, Linda, of Smithfield; his special friends, Jerry and Margaret Wells, Julie and L.J. Potts; several nieces and nephews; and a special cat, Shadow.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Anderson.
The family requests no flowers, memorials may be made to New Hope United Methodist Church, 200 E. New Hope Road, Goldsboro, N.C. 27534 or to the Wayne County Humane Society, P.O. Box 821, Goldsboro, N.C. 27533.
The family will receive friends at the home of Jerry and Margaret Wells, 1301 W. New Hope Road, Goldsboro, and also following the service on Wednesday at New Hope United Methodist Church.
Arrangements are by Seymour Funeral Home and Cremation, Goldsboro.
