DWIGHT HANNIBAL JERNIGAN

June 23, 1946-Jan. 13, 2008

Dwight Hannibal Jernigan, 61, died Sunday following a courageous battle with pancreatic and lung cancer. Dwight was born in Grantham to the late David and Eunice Westbrook Jernigan.

Dwight is survived by one son, Dave Jernigan and wife, Glenna, of Indiana; two grandchildren, Kameron and Zoey Jernigan; two step-grandchildren, Tazia and Tiara Taylor of Indiana; and special friend, Rella Jernigan of Grantham. Other survivors include five sisters, Betty Gainey and husband, Dale, Joanne Roberts and husband, Hugh, and Gina Jernigan Renfroe, all of Goldsboro, Linda Settlemyer and husband, Carl, and Vickie Jernigan and partner, Judy Nixon, all of Maryland; three brothers, John Jernigan and wife, Jolene, of Washington, N.C.; Harry Jernigan and wife, Kaye, of Goldsboro, Phil Jernigan and wife, Rhonda, of Raleigh, R.K. and Frances Jernigan of Dudley; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Larry Coates, Wayne Meads, Wayne Sullivan, Jim Grantham, Lamont Futrell and Ralph Grady.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. James Atkins and his staff at Southeastern Oncology Center, to Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation and their staff, and to Community Hospice and Home Care and their staff.

Funeral services will be held at Jordan's Chapel Baptist Church, Highway 13 South, on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Ray Smeltzer and the Rev. Frank Sandy officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Flowers are welcome, but memorials may be made to Jordan's Chapel Baptist Church or to the American Cancer Society.

The family will receive friends in the church immediately following the service and at other times at the home of Joanne and Hugh Roberts, 2903 McLain St., Goldsboro.
