JASPER 'JAP' DAVIS JR.

WILMINGTON -- Jasper D. "Jap" Davis Jr., 90, died Saturday at Autumn Care of Myrtle Grove. He was born in Wilson, N.C., the son of the late Jasper D. Davis and Luna Mae Chambers Davis. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eris "Cotton" Davis, in 2006, and by a brother, Tom Davis.

"Jap" attended Duke University and was a member of the original "Iron Dukes" football team having played in the 1939 Rose Bowl. He taught and coached at New Hanover High School from 1946 to 1968 and then served as business manager for the New Hanover County Public School System from 1968 to 1983. Jap Davis was inducted into the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame in 2007.

Mr. Davis was a member and Elder Emeritus at First Christian Church of Wilmington and was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during WWII.

Surviving are two daughters, Susan Davis Schlotter and husband, Jim, of Crescent City, Calif., Jan Cagle and husband. Bob. of Goldsboro, N.C.; two grandchildren, Sarah Davis Cagle of Boone, N.C., and Rob Cagle of Raleigh, N.C.; one brother, Bill Davis and wife, Alice, of Wilson, N.C.; two sisters, Laura Moore, Sara Ethridge and husband, Wiley, both of Wilson, N.C.; an uncle, George W. "Buck" Davis and wife, Betty Sue, of Rocky Mount, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Patricia Sturdivant of Marshville, N.C.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008, at First Christian Church of Wilmington by Dr. Lance A. Perry and the Rev. Ailsa G. Gonzalez. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
