CHAPEL HILL -- Hugh Tyson Westray Sr., died Saturday at University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill at the age of 87.

Hugh was born in Goldsboro, N.C., the son of Luther Albert Westray and Cassie Tyson Westray. He proudly served his country in the Pacific during World War II as a member of the U.S. Army 227th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Search Light Battalion "Moonlight Calvary". He moved to Chapel Hill, N.C., in 1960, working in the retail furniture and appliance business. He was the owner and proprietor of Hugh's Food and Party Store on East Franklin Street in Chapel Hill from 1971 until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of the University United Methodist Church, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Hugh is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Margery; son, Hugh Tyson Westray Jr.; granddaughter, Emily Westray of Pensacola, Fla.; son, Mark Sutton Westray; daughter-in-law, Gloria Westray; and grandchildren, Alexander and Caroline Westray of Cary, N.C. He was predeceased by a sister, Marjorie Ogburn.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008, at 2 p.m. at the University United Methodist Church in Chapel Hill, with visitation to follow in the church parlor. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, at 2 p.m. at the Willowdale Cemetery in Goldsboro, N.C.

Memorials may be made to the University United Methodist Church of Chapel Hill, the Inter-Faith Council for Social Service or the benefit of choice.
