JEWITT DAVIS THOMPSON

CARY -- Jewitt D. Thompson died Friday, Dec. 28, 2007. She was born in Wayne County, the daughter of Weaver B. and Annie Pearl Edwards Davis. She was predeceased by, in addition to her parents, sisters, Ruth and Daphne.

Mrs. Thompson is survived by her husband, Rufus E. "Ed"; and two sons and daughter-in-law, Gerald and Dottie and Michael; grandsons and granddaughters-in-law, Jacob and Amanda Thompson, Jody and Sarah Thompson; step-granddaughter and step-granddaughter-in-law, Ashley and Jonathon Hale; great-granddaughter, Rebecca Thompson, and great-grandson, Edward Thompson; and brother and sister-in-law, Landis and Janet Davis.

After graduating from Atlantic Christian College, now Barton College, Wilson, N.C., where she was listed in "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities," she taught all high school English classes at Eureka School in Duplin County for four years. The next 10 years were spent as a housewife and mother. When her second child was in the second grade, Mrs. Thompson resumed her teaching career -- first as a substitute teacher in Raleigh schools and then teacher at Millbrook School in Wake County and Josephus Daniels School in Raleigh. In 1984, she retired after teaching for 32 years.

During her career in education, Jewitt was recognized as a master English teacher with special expertise in the area of grammar. She was requested on several occasions to hold seminars on grammar for other teachers of English. One year, because of her untiring efforts to bring out the best in her students, she was named Teacher of the Year. She was gifted with beautiful penmanship and was called on frequently to write for special occasions.

Mrs. Thompson was a charter member of Emanuel Baptist Church, Raleigh, where she taught a young people's Sunday School class and later the Hope Ladies Class for many years. She and her husband, Ed, transferred their membership in 1988 to Hayes Barton Baptist Church.

After 50 years in Raleigh, Mr. and Mrs. Thompson, in April of 2000 moved to Glenaire Continuing Care Retirement Community in Cary.

A memorial service will be held at Hayes Barton Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2007. The family will receive friends after the memorial service at the church.
