MOUNT OLIVE -- Mrs. Bergie Shepard Smith, 89, died Friday at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Lemley "J.L." Smith Jr.; a brother, John S. Shepard; and her parents, John Stedman Shepard and Bergernetter "Bertie" Nixon Shepard, she was a homemaker and had been a school teacher in her earlier years.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Mount Olive, and prior to 2004, she and her late husband were longtime residents of the 500 block of West Main Street in Mount Olive.
Surviving family members include two daughters sons-in-law, Brenda S. and John J. Gaffney of Greensboro, and Betty S. and E. Lee Quinn of Seven Lakes; five grandchildren, Jay Gaffney and wife, Elizabeth, Kevin Gaffney, Brian Quinn, Suzanne Quinn, and Patrick Quinn; and four great-grandchildren, Sydney Grace Gaffney, Eathan Quinn, Joshua Quinn, and Braden Quinn.
The family will receive friends today at Tyndall Funeral Home from 1 until 1:30 p.m., at which time they will process to Wayne Memorial Park for a 2 p.m. graveside service of which the Rev. Eugene Alexander will officiate.
