VERA BENNETT DAUGHTRY

Vera Bennett Barfield Daughtry, 98, died Wednesday morning at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Daughtry was born to the late Joshua and Margaret Flowers Barfield of Mount Olive. She graduated from Mount Olive High School. Mrs. Daughtry married Benjamin James Daughtry of Newton Grove on Feb. 9, 1931. She worked with Branch Bank and Trust from January, 1947 until retiring as assistant cashier in August, 1974. Since 1945, Mrs. Daughtry has been a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and held a number of positions within the church. She served on the Administrative Board, treasurer of the United Methodist Women, president and treasurer of the Friendship Sunday School Class and of the Church History Fund, and had served on the Altar Guild.

Mrs. Daughtry was a member of the David Williams Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and held the positions of Regent and treasurer. She had also served as treasurer of the Thomas Wotton Colonial Dames of the XVII Century. As an active member of her community, Mrs. Daughtry worked with the American Heart Association, was a member of the Wayne County Historical Society, had served as the president of the Goldsboro Council of Garden Clubs in North Carolina and had also served as president and treasurer of the Evergreen Garden Club. She had been active in the Wayne Community Concert Associ-ation for many years and was honored recently for her 50 years of service. Mrs. Daughtry was presented her life membership pins for her roles as president of her circle and treasurer for the church United Methodist Women. Mrs. Daughtry had also volunteered at Wayne Memorial Hospital and had served on the Wayne County Public Library grounds committee.

Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Homer Morris and the Rev. Thurman Horney officiating. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.

Mrs. Daughtry is survived by her grandchildren, Ashton "T" Griffin IV and wife, Paula P. Griffin, of Mount Olive, Margaret G. Bailey and husband, J. Scott Bailey, of Virginia Beach, Va., Benjamin James Daughtry III and wife, Kelly Daughtry, of Luther-ville, Md., and Sarah Elizabeth Daughtry of Golds-boro; five great-grandchildren, Emily Faith Dobbs of New York, N.Y., Benjamin James Daughtry IV of Luther-ville, Md., Megan Bennette Bailey, Allison Scott Bailey and Brittany Nicole Heather, all of Virginia Beach, Va. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth J. Daughtry of Goldsboro and son-in-law, Ashton T. Griffin III and wife, Shirley Myers Griffin, of Goldsboro.

In addition to her husband, parents, brother and sisters, she was preceded in death by her children, Bennette Daughtry Griffin and Benjamin James Daughtry Jr.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 204 E. Chestnut St., Goldsboro, N.C. 27530 or the American Cancer Society, 930-B Wellness Drive, Greenville, N.C. 27834 or to the Wayne Community Con-cert Series.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.
