GRACE T. TEMPLE

CHARLOTTE — Grace Tillett Temple, 97, formerly of Goldsboro, died Tuesday at the Carriage Club of Charlotte.

Grace was born in Durham. Her family later moved to Timberlake where she grew up. She was one of 11 children of Ernest and Sue Betty Tillett. She attended Duke University School of Nursing and was a member of the first graduating class in 1931 with a BS in nursing. She began her career as a pubic health nurse. She married John Bowers Wiggins and had one daughter, Elizabeth. He died in 1942. After his death, she worked in Durham for Dr. Eleanor Easley as an OB/Gyn nurse. In 1954, she married James Pettigrew Temple of Selma. In 1960 the Temples moved to Goldsboro where he was manager of the Social Security Administration Office. Grace was very active at Saint Paul United Methodist Church as well as the Goldsboro Garden Club and the DARs. She loved her gardening and flowers and was known for her beautiful yard. She was a master flower show judge. She enjoyed reading and classical music. When her husband died she moved to Charlotte in order to be near her daughter and grandson.

Grace is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth Wigging Ertel; a grandson, Stephen Edward Ertel and his wife, Vanessa; as well as two brothers and a sister. She has numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at Saint Paul United Methodist Church on Tuesday Nov. 27 at 11 a.m. Visitation will be from 10:30 to 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will take place at Sunset Memorial Park in Smithfield at 2 p.m.
