PRINCETON -- William Fletcher Burgess Sr., 92, died Tuesday afternoon in Johnston Memorial Hospital.

Born in Johnston County to the late James Robert and Druzilla Hol-loman Bur-gess, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Rochelle Stephenson Burgess. A U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of WWII he was a member of the Pine Level VFW. He was a former member of the Wilson's Mills Baptist Church and presently an active member of the Ebenezer United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and served on the administrative board council. He was an avid gardener and loved working in his yard with his faithful dog, Lulu.

Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home in Selma with the Rev. Rose Hicks and the Rev. Billie Lawson officiating. Burial will follow in the Knollwood Memorial Cemetery.

Surviving are his wife, Sally Wortham Burgess; sons, Bill Burgess and wife, Carol, of Selma, Duke Burgess and wife, Teresa, of Wake Forest; daughters, Marvel Dixon and husband, Roy, of Clayton, Jane Burgess of Surf City; stepson, Edward Wade of Gloucester, Va.; stepdaughter, Beckie Daniels and husband, Marvin, of LaGrange; six grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 10 great- grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; and two step-great-great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 3859 U.S. 70 West, Goldsboro, N.C. 27530 or Wilson's Mills Baptist Church, P.O. Drawer C, Wilson's Mills, N.C. 27593.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
