MELVIN C. TILGHMAN

Melvin Carroll Tilghman, 65, of 217 Cattleman's Road, died Monday at his residence. He was a native of Lenoir County, born the son of the late Luby and Kathleen Hamm Tilghman. He was a retired truck driver.

On Dec. 31, 1997, he married Peggy Sue Combs, who survives. Also surviving is one son, Dwayne Tilghman of Goldsboro; two stepsons, Larry Allison and Bobby Allison, both of Statesville; three daughters, Tammy Young of Tampa, Fla., Marti Tilghman-Vaughn of Dudley, N.C., Melissa Chiaramonte of High Point, N.C.; two stepdaughters, Donna Combs of Statesville and Melissa Wolfe of Wilkesboro, N.C.; one brother, Elton Earl Tilghman of Goldsboro, N.C.; and 10 grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters and four brothers.

A memorial service celebrating Melvin's life will be held on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Westmoreland Chapel of Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home conducted by the Rev. Fred Shoemaker. The family will speak with friends following the service at the funeral home.
