L. Wayne Gurley, 59, of 3166 N.C. Highway 111 North, departed this life for his heavenly home on Monday at his home surrounded by his family.

Wayne was born in Wayne County to Victoria Lynch Gurley of Grantham and the late Eugene Gurley Sr. He was a driver with Pope Transport and had a great love of fast cars and for drag racing. Most recently, Wayne was most passionate about his grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Free Chapel P.F.W.B. Church with the Rev. Kelvin Gurley and the Rev. Mike Williams officiating. Burial will follow at the Overbee Family Cemetery.

In addition to his mother, Wayne is survived by his devoted wife of 25 years, Charlene Howell Gurley; his son, the Rev. Kelvin Wayne Gurley and wife, Sheila, of Grantham; his daughter, Katrina Kornegay and husband, Tommy, of Rosewood; and his grandchildren, Kristin Ezzell, Faith Gurley, Gauge Norris, Allison Gurley and Tank Kornegay. He is also survived by his sisters, Peggy Warrick of Fremont, Shirley Burgette of LaGrange and Faye Jackson of Goldsboro; his brothers, Ray Gurley of Princeton and Eugene Gurley Jr. of Dudley; his mother-in-law, Edna Howell Orton of Patetown; his brother-in-law, Gilbert Howell and wife, Sharon, of Patetown; several special friends and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life, in care of Sharon Howell, 3122 N.C. Highway 111 North, Goldsboro, N.C. 27534.

Pallbearers for the service will be Danny Reese, Donnie Warrick Jr., Pender, Gilbert Howell, Rob Sharp and Neil Swinson.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at the home.
