Died Sept. 17, 2007

Oscar Jarman Howell Jr., 88, beloved son of the late Oscar Jarman Howell Sr. and Maude Scott Howell, passed peacefully on Monday.

A native of Wayne County, Mr. Howell was the devoted husband of Frances Robinson Howell for 62 years.

Mr. Howell was an honor graduate of N.C. State University with a BS in Agriculture. While a student at N.C. State, Mr. Howell was an active member of several honor fraternities: Alpha Zeta, Blue Key, Phi Kappa Phi, and Pine Burr Society. In preparation for service as president of the N.C. State University Young Christian Association, Mr. Howell attended Columbia University. He graduated from Southeastern Trust School at Campbell College in 1970 and was elected the first president. In 1971, Mr. Howell was named a member of the Board of Regents of the Southeastern Trust School.

Mr. Howell served as vice president of the Wayne County Livestock Development Association and as its director, a post he held for numerous years. Additionally, Mr. Howell was appointed director of the Wayne County Memorial Community Building and was a member of the Goldsboro Civitan Club, Goldsboro Masonic Lodge, the Belfast Grange, and the N.C. Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers.

After his retirement from Wachovia Bank and Trust Company in the capacity of trust officer specializing in farm management, Mr. Howell dedicated himself to his family, church, and friends. A lifelong member of Salem United Methodist Church, he sang in the choir for 65 years and served in various capacities. His latter years saw him active as farmer and land developer.

In addition to his wife, Frances, he is survived by two sons, Timothy Jarman Howell and wife, Mary Ann, of Goldsboro and Christopher Robinson Howell and wife, Paula, of Greensboro; four grandsons, Christian Jarman Howell and wife, Jill, Eric Christopher Howell and wife, Stephanie, Justin Jarman Howell and Trace Robinson Howell; one granddaughter, Lauren Marie Howell; two great-grandsons, Christian Jarman Howell II and Jackson Oscar Howell; two brothers, William Smith Howell and wife, Molly, of Wilmington, and Admiral Howell of Goldsboro; two sisters, Grace Howell Smith of Goldsboro and Nancy Howell Graham and husband, Curtis, of Salisbury; and many wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Howell and brother-in-law, John Lee Smith.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2007 at 10 a.m. at Seymour Funeral Home with the Rev. T.C. West and the Rev. Jean Hood officiating. Burial will follow at Wayne Memorial Park. The family will receive friends after the graveside service.

Flowers are welcome, and memorials can be made to Hospice or to a charity of one's choice.
