Carrol Gene Davenport, 74, of 2102 S. John St., died Tuesday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. Born in Lenoir County, he was the son of the late Jesse P. and Verna Baysden Davenport. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Gene retired from Durham Life Insurance Company after 25 years and was currently employed with Citizens Security Insurance Company. He was a member of Westwood United Methodist Church and enjoyed fishing and working with his grape vines.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home with the Rev. Rufus Butner and the Rev. Bill Garner officiating. Burial will follow in New Hope Friends Cemetery.

Mr. Davenport is survived by his wife, Yvonne Davenport; a daughter, Sherry Cody of Jacksonville, Fla.; a granddaughter, Laura Dickenson and husband, Jimmy, of Virginia Beach, Va.; and special great-nephews, Brian Jones and Braxton Kornegay, both of Goldsboro.

The family will be receiving friends Thursday night from 7 to 9 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home and at other times will be at the home.
