Charles Allen Summerlin Jr., 90, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2007, at Cypress Glen Retirement Community in Greenville.

Charlie was born in Mount Olive on March 24, 1917, to the late Charles Allen Summerlin Sr. and Fannie Jones Summerlin. He graduated from high school and college at Oak Ridge Military Institute. Charlie was married in 1942 to Betty Burns of Robeson County. He was also called to active military duty in 1942 and served in the Army Infantry in Europe during World War II, where he participated in the Adrennes, Central Europe, the Rhineland and the Battle of the Bulge Campaigns. Charlie was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge with three Battle Stars.

After the war, he and Betty moved to Goldsboro. He was a member of the sales staff of Crawford Norwood Realtors. Charlie was a charter member, ordained deacon and member of the Womble Sunday school class of Madison Avenue Baptist Church. For many years, Charlie was a member of the Goldsboro Lions Club and held the offices of secretary, vice-president and president. He was later a member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club.

Charlie retired from the North Carolina National Guard with the rank of lieutenant colonel. In 1971, he was awarded the North Carolina Distinguished Service Medal for his outstanding service. Charlie and Betty moved to Cypress Glen Retirement Community in Greenville in 2001.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Betsy and Mike Harrold of Goldsboro; his sons and daughters-in-law, Allen and Pam Summerlin of Kinston, and Page and Barbara Summerlin of Lynchburg, Va.; his grandchildren, Doug and Tammy Daughtry of Greenville, Mary Charles and David Jacobs of Mount Olive, Danny and Missy Summerlin of Chapel Hill, Shelley Summerlin of Raleigh, and Ben, Jennifer and Jill Summerlin of Lynchburg, Va. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren, Noah and Brittany Jacobs of Fayetteville, Cole and Dylan Jacobs of Mount Olive, Tristyn and Drake Daughtry of Greenville, Charles, Sallie and Smith Summerlin of Chapel Hill, and Morgan Jacobs of Fayetteville. Surviving also are his sister-in-law, Julia Summerlin of Stafford, Va., and her four daughters and their husbands, Marsha and John Smart of Littleton, Colo.; Susan and Larry Townsend of Knoxville, Tenn.; Nancy and George Arnold of Mason Neck, Va.; and Libby and Skip Donaldson of Fredericksburg, Va.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Burns Summerlin.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cypress Glen Benevolent Care, 100 Hickory St., Greenville, N.C. 27858 or the charity of one's choice.

A private interment will be held Monday at Wayne Memorial Park followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Homer Morris officiating. Visitation will be at Seymour Funeral on Sunday from 6-8 p.m. At other times, the family will be at the home of Betsy and Mike Harrold, 504 Cashwell Place, Goldsboro, N.C.
