ELLA MAE LANE

Ella Mae Finch Lane, 87, died Friday, July 13, 2007. She was born March 2, 1920, in Hamlet to the late Britton Lydwell Finch and Katherine Farmer Finch.

Mrs. Lane, a devoted wife and mother, was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, John Robert Lane Sr.; her in-laws, John Wright Lane and Emma Lane Lane. She was also predeceased by a brother, Charles Thomas Finch Sr., and a sister, Katharine Finch Knowles, and is survived by her son, John Robert Lane Jr. of Wilmington.

Mrs. Lane moved to Mount Olive in 1939 from Rockingham, when her father was appointed chief of police there. He had previously served as deputy sheriff of Richmond County, where he also maintained his family farm.

Mrs. Lane was a 60-year member of the First Baptist Church of Mount Olive. The Lane family has been members of the First Baptist Church since its 1863 inception. Mrs. Lane was a founding member and one of the first officers of the Green Thumb Garden Club of Mount Olive, which was organized in Oct. 9, 1949. She retired as office manager from E. J. Pope and Son of Mount Olive in May 1985.

A graveside service will be held Monday, July 16, at 11 a.m. at Maplewood Cemetery, Mount Olive. The family will receive friends following the service at their home, 122 East Station St.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bellamy Mansion Museum, a stewardship property of Preservation North Carolina, 503 Market Street, Wilmington, N.C. 28401.
