MABEL D. DORR

Died June 13, 2007

HENDERSON -- Mabel Irene Daniels Dorr, 85, of 102 Fernwood Creek Court, died peacefully Wednesday morning, June 13, 2007, at her home with her daughter by her side.

Mrs. Dorr was born in Goldsboro to the late Mabel Grant Daniels and Benjamin Williams Daniels. She was known as Mazie by her many friends and surrounded herself with beauty all her life. She loved her home, which she decorated and furnished with special care. Her gardens were lovely. She was a gifted seamstress and loved to read.

Mazie graduated from Guilford College in 1943. She was president of her dormitory, Mary Hobbs Hall, and served on the May Court as Maid of Honor her senior year. She was a beautiful, dashing young woman and was a lady all her life. Mazie loved to cook and was famous for her southern fried chicken, which was enjoyed by all. Her pies were famous as were her special cakes. Each Christmas she made fruitcakes with her Aunt Mamie's old recipe. She always spoke of the childhood memory of her mother and Aunt Mamie making fruitcakes in November for Christmas. Sometimes one of the cakes she stored in the big dining room chest disappeared by Christmas, slice by tiny slice.

In 1955, Mrs. Dorr moved from Goldsboro with her husband and their four children to open the G.E. Appliance Sales and Service on Garnett Street, with the late Levy Mitchell. In 1968, after selling the store to Buddy Thomas, she assisted in the antique business with her husband for more than 25 years.

She was a past president of the PTA at the old Central School and of the Friendly Garden Club and a former member of the Woodland Garden Club.

She was an active member of the First Untied Methodist Church and the No. 3 Woman's Circle.

Funeral will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Rose Chapel of First United Methodist Church by the Rev. Charles M. Cook. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. in the Daniels Memorial United Methodist Church Cemetery in Goldsboro.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Leslie Kenneth Dorr; her daughters and son-in-law, Lee Anne Dorr of San Francisco, Calif., Jean Dorr and Carl Lusted of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., and Nancy Dorr of Portland, Ore.; three grandchildren, Heather Diana, Dr. Jud Ready and Grace Holmes; two great-grandchildren, Vivian and Shyma; and one brother and sister-in-law, James Norwood and Geraldine Daniels of Goldsboro.

She was preceded in death by her son, William Leslie "Billy" Dorr; her sister, Eleanor Faye Daniels Strider; and her brother, Benjamin William Daniels Jr.

The family will receive friends Monday afternoon from 3:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. at the J. M. White Funeral Home, 60 Zeb Robinson Road, Henderson. At other times, they will be at her home.

Serving as active pall bearers will be Jim Daniels Jr., Jeff Daniels, Ben Daniels III, Roger Casey Sr., Bill Igo and Buddy Thomas.

Flowers are welcome, or memorials in her memory may be made to First United Methodist Church, 114 Church St., Henderson, N.C. 27536 or Daniels Memorial United Methodist Church, 2803 E. Ash St., Goldsboro, N.C. 27534, which was founded by her great-grandfather William Daniels in 1893.

The daughters would like to thank all of the caregivers for their love, dedication and service over the past year and a half, and Buddy Thomas for his help over the years.

Arrangements are by the J. M. White Funeral Home.
