EUGENE J. MINGER

SUFFOLK, VA. -- Cmdr. Eugene James Minger, U.S. Navy Retired, 81, of the 300 block of Page Place, Suffolk, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, June 12, 2007, in his home. Cmdr. Minger was born July 31,1925, in Pottstown, Pa. to the late Michael E. and Elizabeth Malaney Minger. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Anne. M. Feinauer. His naval career spanned for more than 42 years, retiring on July 31, 1985, from the U.S. Naval Reserve. As a naval aviator, he served his country faithfully, proudly and honorably. He served during World War II on the U.S.S. Antietam, as well as numerous other aircraft carriers. Cmdr. Minger recently relocated from Goldsboro, N.C. to Suffolk, Va., where he was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and had been active in both the Fleet Reserve and the American Legion until his health began to fail him. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association and The Order Of The Daedalians (a military organization for both active duty and retired aviators). He later worked for Western Union for a little over 14 years. After relocating, he attended Faith Lutheran Church in Suffolk.

Survivors include his loving wife of 27 years, Shirley Carol Minger; four sons, Gene Minger and wife, Janet, of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Thomas Minger and wife, Kathi, of Pottstown, Pa., Keith Johnson and wife, Diane, of Chesapeake, Va., and Kyle Johnson and wife, Teri, of Howell, N.J.; three daughters, Karen Johnson, Kathy Decker and husband, Gregory, all of Hamburg, N.J., and Kelly Bass and husband, Michael, of Suffolk, Va.; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, John R. "Jack" Minger and wife, Letica, of Miami, Fla.

A service of remembrance will be on Sunday, June 17, 2007 at 2 p.m. in Faith Lutheran Church. The Rev. Scott Benson will officiate. Inurnment will be in Arlington National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Faith Lutheran Church, 2730 Bridge Road, Suffolk, Va. 23435.

The Bennetts Creek Chapel of Sturtevant Funeral Home is serving the Minger family.
