TED MCDONOUGH

Oct. 9, 1930-May 23, 2007

Charles Edward "Ted" McDonough, 76, died suddenly on Wednesday at Wake Medical Center.

Ted was born in Long Island to the late Lee McDonough and Nadine Gens McDonough. He graduated from Rutgers University in 1952, with a degree in business administration and was an All American baseball player. He was offered a baseball contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers, but chose to join the United States Air Force to become a fighter pilot.

Ted served the Air Force for 28 years and traveled around the globe. He was transferred to Vietnam, where he flew 104 combat missions and received the Bronze Star. A tour in Germany followed, after which he transferred to Seymour Johnson Air Force Base as Director of Morale, Welfare and Recreation. He later retired as a highly decorated lieutenant colonel.

After working briefly as a job interviewer with the Employment Security Commission, he joined the Goldsboro Police Department in March of 1981 as a civilian investigative aide. To prepare for his new career, he attended a police academy where he graduated first in his class at the age of 52.

Ted is best known for being the first police coordinator for the Goldsboro-Wayne Crime Stoppers program, which began in November 1982. Ted's enthusiasm, hard work and dedication were instrumental in the local program receiving international recognition and numerous awards. He also assisted in getting the Crime Stoppers program started in numerous other cities in eastern North Carolina.

During this time, he was also an avid tennis player. He was part of a regular foursome who played most Saturdays and Sundays at the Goldsboro Country Club.

He retired from his second career in 1994. After his retirement, Ted enjoyed numerous cruises with his loving wife, Norma Foote McDonough.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Brenda Essa of Newborg Park, Calif.; his stepchildren, John A Foote III of Austin, Texas, Jana M. Foote of Pikeville and Kevin R. Foote of Evanston, Ill.; and his grandchildren, Johnny Essa, John A. Foote IV, Cecily Foote, Maxwell Kevin Foote, Sophia Foote, Eric C. Foote and Jana R. Foote.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home. Full military honors will be rendered at the service. The family will receive friends Tuesday following the service at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at his home, 104 Essex Court, Goldsboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in his memory may be made to the Goldsboro Crimestoppers, 308 N. William St., Goldsboro, N.C. 27534.
