ROLAND STRICKLAND SR.

PINE LEVEL -- Roland Edward Strickland Sr., age 88, of 50 Manor Avenue in Pine Level and formerly of Goldsboro, died Thursday at Wake Medical Center. Born in Wayne County, he was the son of the late George and Lucy Snipes Strickland. A charter member of Pineview Baptist Church in Belfast, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr. Strickland was present during the bombing of Pearl Harbor and received the Purple Heart while a member of the 82nd Airborne in Normandy.

Graveside funeral services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Willowdale Cemetery with the Rev. Roger Banks officiating.

Mr. Strickland is survived by his wife, Estelle Jones Strickland; two sons, Roland E. Strickland Jr. and J.C. Strickland, both of Raleigh, N.C.; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda S. and Billy H. McCollum of Seven Springs, N.C.; two brothers, Herman Strickland of San Antonio, Texas, James Albert Strickland of Goldsboro, N.C.; one sister, Ruth Stewart of Portsmouth, Va.; six grandchildren, Mark J. and Amanda McCollum, April M. and Dwayne Peeden, Joshua D. and Allison McCollum, Michelle Lyn Strickland, Patrick R. Strickland, Jay and April Strickland; nine great-grandchildren, Sarah, Rachel and Will McCollum, Gavin and Emily Peeden, Margaret McCollum, Courtney and Julie Strickland; and two step-grandchildren, Taylor Warren and Kayli Cashwell.

Family members will greet friends Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
