REV. HAROLD J. STEVENS

GRIFFIN, Ga. -- The Rev. Harold J. Stevens, 85, passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2007 at Christian Ministries Hospice.

The Rev. Stevens was born September 20, 1921 in Wayne County, North Carolina, son of the late Rex Stevens and the late Bertie Jinnette Stevens. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy, serving in the South Pacific during World War II. After returning home from the war he attended and graduated from Columbia International University (formerly Columbia Bible College) in Columbia, S.C., and was ordained as a Baptist minister. Following his ordination, the Rev. Stevens went to work in the mission field serving with the South Africa General Mission as a bush pilot and missionary to the Zulu people for 27 years. Upon his return to the United States, the Rev. Stevens served with CNEC and Pioneers Missions, and later worked with Harvesters International, including holding a seat on their board of directors. The Rev. Stevens also worked with Christian Air Ministries, serving as their Chaplain. He was a former member of the Woolsey Baptist Church and currently a member of Orchard Hill First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Josephine M. Stevens of Griffin, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law, Becky Stevens-Grobbelaar and Christo Grobbelaar, also of Griffin, Ga.; son, Bob Stevens of Cullowhee, N.C.; nephews, Bobby Crawford, John Crawford, and Jay Howell, and nieces, Judy Porter and Treva Howell.

Funeral services for the Rev. Harold J. Stevens will be Monday, April 23, 2007 at 10 a.m. at Falling Creek Baptist Church in Grantham, N.C. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Harvesters International Missions, 450 Spanish Wells Drive, Hilton Head Island, SC 29928, in memory of the Rev. Stevens.
