Dr. Thomas Carrell Boykin, 77, died Saturday morning at Wayne Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loved ones.

A native of Sims, N.C., Dr. Boykin was born to the late John Thomas Boykin and Viola Bexley Boykin. For 40 years, Dr. Boykin was a dentist in Goldsboro. He was a graduate of Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va., and East Carolina University. Dr. Boykin was also a graduate of the School of Dentistry at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Ky. He served his internship at the Madigan Army Medical Center in Seattle. After his internship, Dr. Boykin served his country for eight years in the United States Army. He was a member of the Wayne County Dental Society, the North Carolina Dental Society and a life member of the American Dental Association. Dr. Boykin was also a member of the East Carolina Prosthetic Study Club and was a fellow in the Academy of Dentistry.

Dr. Boykin was an active member of Madison Avenue Baptist Church and also the Madison Men Sunday School Class. He was a man of incredible faith in God, hope for the world and love for others. He is remembered as a generous, caring, compassionate man and loyal friend to so many. He loved learning and had traveled to many states and countries with his wife as well as other family and friends. Since his first mission trip, he returned many times to Venezuela and Mexico to volunteer in various service projects and to experience the people and culture that he loved. In all that he did, Dr. Boykin demonstrated a level of sincerity and integrity that was rare and special.

Dr. Boykin was a past board member of the Salvation Army and was a member of the Golden "K" Kiwanis Club and the Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. No. 139. He was also a member of the Sudan Temple and the Wayne Shrine Club and was a Jester.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Madison Avenue Baptist Church, with the Rev. Talmage Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.

Dr. Boykin is survived by his wife, Janice Teachey Boykin; his son, Cord S. Boykin and wife, Stella, of Wilson; his daughters, Shawn B. Moncure and husband, Richard, of Charlotte, Tomye Spears-Milkman and husband, Paul, of Maryland, Robyn Boykin of Ardmore, Okla., and Scartlett West and husband, Bill, of San Antonio, Texas; his grandchildren, Bram Moncure, Taylor West, Samantha Spears, Stephanie York and Elizabeth West; his step-granddaughters, Mallory McAden and Mary Ashley McAden; his brother, Bexley Boykin and wife, Helen, of Sims; and his sister, Sylvia Andracchio and husband, Dr. Vincent Andracchio, of Rocky Mount.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Golden "K" Kiwanis Club, the Wayne County Dental Society and the Madison Men's Sunday School Class.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.
