GEORGE W. MARKLAND SR.

Feb. 12, 1919-March 23, 2007

THE PLAINS, Va. -- George Watkins Markland, of The Plains, died at age 88 on Thursday at Fauquier Hospital. One of nine children of George Nathaniel Markland and Dora Walker, he was born February 12, 1919 in Morganton, N.C. He was predeceased in 1999 by his wife of 52 years, Myrtie Estelle Wade Markland.

While serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre from 1940 to 1945, Mr. Markland was a teletype operator, expert marksman and bomb squad member, and was awarded a Bronze Star Medal. After his tour of duty in the Army, he settled in The Plains and worked for the Veterans Administration and the Department of State in Virginia and Washington, D.C. During the 1940's and '50's, he also worked as a commercial and private pilot and flight instructor. Always an avid hunter and fisherman, his retirement in 1975 after thirty years of civil service afforded him the opportunity to pursue these pastimes and to concentrate on his thriving organic horticulture and aquaculture. A longtime member of The Plains Baptist Church, he was a deacon for many years and was, with his wife, actively involved in service to his community. He will be long remembered, and sorely missed, for his kind and generous nature, his faithful and loving devotion to his family, friends and faith and for his serenity and strength in the face of adversity.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at 11 a.m. from Rouse Funeral Home with the Rev. Tony McLamb officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery with military honors.

Mr. Markland is survived by his children, George W. Markland Jr. of The Plains and Annette Elaine Markland Storey of Marshall; and by his grandchildren, Scott Storey, Jeremy Storey, Jennifer Storey and Jeff Storey.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home. Online condolences may be expressed at www.rousefh.com. Arrange-ments are with Rouse Funeral Home, LaGrange.
