KINSTON -- Joseph "Joe" Sherwood Head, 25, passed away Monday, March 12, 2007. Joe was born in Lenoir County on September 4, 1981. He was a graduate of Tar Heel Challenge Military Academy and a veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he served on the USS Monterey and the USS Nicholson. Joe was a member of Westside Original Free Will Baptist Church and trusted God to carry him through the many challenges that he faced during his life. A loyal Duke fan, Joe was proud to wear the team colors to show his support and avidly enjoyed watching the games. He had a great personality and a positive attitude that showed in the warmth of his smile and will remain in the hearts of his family and friends forever.

Funeral services will be held 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2007, at Hull Road OFWB Church, 3984 Hull Road, Snow Hill, N.C. The Rev. Leon Grubbs will officiate the service. Committal services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, March 15, at the Snow Hill Cemetery with military funeral honors.

Joe is survived by his mother and stepfather, Joan and Jerry Fields of Kinston; father and stepmother, Kenneth and Shirley Head of Nashville; maternal grandmother, Sadie Bain of Kinston; maternal stepgrandmother, Frances Fields of Snow Hill; a brother, Chris Taylor and wife, Kristen, of Philadelphia, Pa.; a sister, Donna Garner and husband, Jason, of Snow Hill; stepbrothers, John Fields and wife, April, of Snow Hill, and Tyler Fields of Kinston; stepsisters, Jennifer Brinkley and husband, Tony, of Winterville, N.C., Tina Fields of Kinston, N.C., and Lisa Bauer of Nashville, N.C.; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Joe's paternal grandparents, Joe and Bertha Head, preceded him in death.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service on Wednesday in the Family Life Center of Hull Road Church. At other times the family will be at the home of Joan and Jerry Fields, 2156 Tara Drive, Kinston, N.C. In lieu of flowers, the family request that contributions in memory of Joe be made to the Brain Injury Association of North Carolina, 202 Arlington Blvd., Suite T, Greenville, N.C. 27834.
