John Ellis Whitfield, 72, 407 W. Chestnut St., died Wednesday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
He was a native of Wayne County and was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Lessie Morrison Whitfield; sisters, Savannah, Lilly, Lula, and Annie Mae; brothers, Bennie and James.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at McIntyre Funeral Home Chapel, 900 S. George St., with Apostle D. L. McIntyre officiating. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Armwood Whitfield of the home; sons, David Williams of Goldsboro, Ervin Williams of Dudley; daughters, Lillian Pittman of Goldsboro, Shirley Speight of Columbus, Ga., Cathy Baker of Ft. Hood, Texas, Sybil Fisher of Charlotte; brothers, Larry Whitfield of Goldsboro, Kirby Whitfield Sr. of Roanoke, Va.; sister, Macie Laverne Jones of Roanoke, Va.; 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be Sunday at McIntyre Funeral Home from 3 to 7:30 p.m.
