DR. SIDNEY SCHRUM

Dr. Sidney Schrum, 84, died Wednesday at the Brian Center. He was born in Marion to the late Earl McNairy and Nell Bly Moose Schrum. He was a graduate of Newton High School in Newton, and Wake Forest College, Wake Forest, where he was a member in the concert and marching band and served as the instructor in organic chemistry. Dr. Schrum was also a graduate of Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tenn., where he was valedictorian of his class. He married Mailande Bishop in 1950. Dr. Schrum began practicing Optometry in Goldsboro in 1951. He was a member of the North Carolina and the American Optometric Associations.

Dr. Schrum served three and one half years in the U.S. Air Force during World War II where he taught hydraulics in Pilot's Ground School in Gulf Port, Miss., and in Sebring, Fla.

As an active member of his community, Dr. Schrum was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church where he served as chairman of the administrative board from 1983-1984. He was chairman of the Finer Carolina Committee from 1953-1955, served as secretary of the first Board of Directors of Wayne Country Day School, and was president of the Community Concert Association from 1973 and 1980. Dr. Schrum had served as the secretary-treasurer of the Kiwanis Club from 1952-1957 and as president in 1972. He was vice chairman of the Wayne County Republican Party from 1981-1983, was chairman of the Wayne County Republican Party from 1983-1985, was an alternate delegate to the National Republican Convention in 1980 and was appointed by Governor Jim Martin to the Executive Mansion Fine Arts Commission from 1985-1993. Dr. Schrum was a past member of the Military Affairs Committee and was a past member of the Wayne County Board of Health.

Graveside services will be at Willow Dale Cemetery Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Thurman Horney officiating.

He is survived by his wife, Mailande Bishop Schrum; children, Lynn Schrum of Malabar, Fla., Sidney Schrum Jr. and wife, Susan, of Fairview, Texas and Phillip Schrum and wife, Holly, of Jefferson Hills, Pa.; grandchildren, Mariah Schrum, Daniel Schrum, David Schrum, Matthew Schrum, Samuel Schrum and Anna Schrum. He is also survived by his brothers, Dr. David Schrum of Tulsa, Okla., Dr. Max Schrum of Taylorsville, and Dr. Tom Schrum of Lenoir.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Laura Nell Schrum Hoffman.
