MOUNT OLIVE -- James Allen "J.A." Jones, 84, was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, February 25th, at the University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill. Funeral services will be held this evening, February 27th, at 7 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Anthony Z. Gurganus and Dr. Dennis Atwood officiating. Visitation will immediately follow the service at the funeral home, and at other times, the family will be at the residence. Committal and interment will be Wednesday, February 28th, at 2 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Park.
A native of Wayne County, he was born August 23, 1922, the son of James Abner Jones and Nora Lewis Jones. Mr. Jones was a retired insurance salesman with Southern Life Insurance Company. He was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church of Mount Olive where he sang in the choir until the time of his illness. He was also a devoted member of the Mount Olive Lions Club, was a past member of the Mount Olive Town Board and also a past member of the Mount Olive Rescue Squad.
He leaves behind a loving wife of 52 years, Latha Seymour Jones, of the home. He was a devoted father to three daughters, Beverly Holliday and husband, Tim, of Thomasville, Barbara Holloman and husband, Terry, of Mount Olive, and Nancy Rea and husband, John, of Snow Hill; two sons, Robbie Jones of the home and Scott Jones of Goldsboro; and his special friend, Heather Harris. He was a loving grandfather to Dillon Holliday and Kelly Holliday of Thomasville, Lindsey Holloman of Mount Olive, and her fiance, Blake Blackwell. He is also survived by his best friend since boyhood, J. W. Flowers and his wife, Doris, of Foresthill, Calif.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his only brother, Robert Thomas Jones.
The family wishes to express its greatest appreciation to the multitude of friends, loved ones, church family and medical professionals who extended their love and support to J. A. and his family during his time of illness. A special thanks to Ms. Diane Sellers for her tireless, compassionate care during his brief stay at home.
