RAEFORD -- Augusta Wayne "A. W." Gardner Jr., 209 W. Central Ave., 80, died Saturday in FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

He was born in Cumberland County to the late Wayne and Priscilla Harward Gardner Sr. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Julius Gardner.

He was a member of Parker United Methodist Church, owned and operated the Raeford Motel, was a World War II veteran and recipient of a World War II Victory Medal and Occupation Medal of Germany. He was also past master of the Raeford Masonic Lodge and a member of the York Rite Shrine, Scottish Rite and Oasis Temple.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Raeford United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Eckie Lancaster officiating. Masonic Rites will be in the Raeford Cemetery.

He is survived by three sons, Wayne Gardner and wife, Debbie, of Raeford, William Gardner and wife, Rita, of Red Springs, and Bruce Gardner and wife, Wanda, of Goldsboro; daughter, Peggy Rose of Goldsboro; grandchildren, Christy Beasley, Janet Thrower, Carrie Branch, Amy Lunsford, Keith, Kevin, Kelley and Kayla Gardner; great-grandchildren, Brittany and Hannah Beasley and Maddison Branch; and nieces, Priscilla Nobles and Laura Knowles.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at Crumpler Funeral Home, Raeford.
