Ernest Agnew Galloway, 91, died Monday, at his home,
105 Wooten Point Road, Goldsboro.
Mr. Galloway was born in Henderson, Ky., the son of the late Mae Melton and Samuel Ernest Galloway. He had three sisters and two brothers all of whom he survived. He attended Murray State University and Centre College in Kentucky. Mr. Galloway was a Deacon of the First Presbyterian Church in Henderson, Ky. He moved to Goldsboro in 1962 and was Senior Vice President of J.P. Taylor Tobacco Company. He worked for Universal Tobacco Company in Richmond, Va. for 54 years. Mr. Galloway traveled to places that included: Africa, South America, Central America, Canada and Australia.
During World War II, he was a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Force and was stationed in England. Mr. Galloway was a bombardier, shot down in a raid over the Rheer Valley in 1943 and was a Prisoner of War of the Germans for approximately two years. He was credited with shooting down three German fighter planes and four highly probable fighter planes. Mr. Galloway participated in the Great Escape from Staley Left III and the 100 mile P.O.W. march across German. He received the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the P.O.W. medal and the EMAE with a Bronze Star.
He was an avid gardener, a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He lived at the Village of Walnut Creek and was a member of Walnut Creek Country Club, where he served on their board. Mr. Galloway was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and had served on the board of the Salvation Army Board for several years. He also had served on the Committee of 100 in Goldsboro.
Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Drew Clark officiating. Burial will follow in Willowdale Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Bennett Galloway; his daughter, Lisa Galloway Reck and husband, Daniel, of Ridgefield, Colo.; and two grandchildren, Amanda and Bennett Reck.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at his home.
