RET. LT. COL. JOHN E. SMITH

Ret. Lt. Col. John Edwin Smith died Dec. 30, 2006, at Wayne Memorial Hospital. He was born in Arlington, Va., the son of Francis and Jessie Smith. He graduated from Washington Lee High School, was in the ROTC unit and played varsity football.
Col. Smith joined the Army Air Corps in 1949 and was sent to England in World War II. He later was assigned to Strategic Air Command, received his regular officers commission and participated in the Korean and Vietnam wars.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; one son, John E. Smith Jr.; two grandsons and four great-grandchildren.
Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.
Arrangements are with Howell Funeral Home and Crematory, Goldsboro.
