BILLY MCPHAIL

MOUNT OLIVE--William Daniel "Billy" McPhail, 88, of 409 West Main St., died Friday afternoon at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

He was the son of the late Daniel Thomas and Vera Chesnutte McPhail.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in the Pacific Campaign of World War II, he was a member of American Legion Post 103 in Mount Olive having served as past commander.

He had been a liaison for former U.S. Congressman, Charlie Whitley and the Third Congressional District, was a retired merchant, having operated McPhail's Dept. Store in Mount Olive, and was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Mount Olive.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday from the First Baptist Church with Dr. Dennis Atwood and the Rev. Anthony Z. Gurganus officiating. Interment will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.

Mr. McPhail is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ethel Owens McPhail of the home; a daughter, Billie Carole McPhail of Virginia Beach, Va.; a son, Dan McPhail and his wife, Gwen, of Mount Olive; a brother, Doug McPhail of Raleigh; five grandchildren, Leisha M. Best and husband, Cliff, of Mount Olive, Ryan McPhail and wife, Kathleen, of Mount Olive, Jared McPhail and wife, Cindy, of Pikeville, Nikki M. and Miguel DeVerona of Goldsboro, and Jordan B. McPhail of Mount Olive; and five great-grandchildren, Tryston Best, Bailey Best, Hayley McPhail, Braeden McPhail, and Abby McPhail.

The family will receive friends at the graveside following the committal service, and at other times at the residence.
