MOUNT OLIVE -- Norwood Carl Odom, 79, 401 Henderson St., died Saturday at Wake Medical Center, Raleigh.

Funeral services were to be held today (Monday) at 2 p.m. from the Tyndall Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Paul Rose and the Rev. Jack Anglin officiating. Interment was to be in Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Olive.

Born in the Rhodes community of Wayne County, he was the son of the late Walter R. and Fannie Huffman Odom. He graduated from Grantham High School in 1948, and in 1966, graduated from Cincinnati College of Funeral Service in Cincinnati, Ohio. A funeral director and embalmer, he had been associated with the former Stanley's Funeral Home in Goldsboro. When it closed, he became associated with Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive, where in years to come, he and his first wife, Frances Whitted Odom, who died in 1997, would become operators and co-owners of the business. They retired in 1987. They had also owned and operated the Mount Olive Floral Co. for several years.

He was a former member of the Mount Olive Rotary Club and had been a member of the First Baptist Church in Mount Olive before transferring his membership to Mill Creek Christian Church at Bentonville.

He is survived by his wife, Lucy McCullen Lee Odom, formerly of the Bentonville community, to whom he was married on Dec. 8, 2001. Also surviving are a sister, Hazel Odom Brown of Mount Olive; two brothers, Ray Odom of Mount Olive and James Odom of Fuquay-Varina; several nieces and nephews; four stepchildren, Pat Lee Robertson of Richmond, Va., Wilson Lee and his wife, Janet, of Bentonville, Ann Lee of Goldsboro and Christie Lee White of Bentonville; five grandchildren, Ann Vaughters of Charlottesville, Va., Nick Robertson of Richmond, Va., and Hannah White, Will White and Leanna White, all of Bentonville; and his beloved furry friend, Smokey.

A sister, Tempie Odom, preceded him in death.

Visitation was held Sunday at Tyndall Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
