MOUNT OLIVE -- David John Kornegay, 89, died Wednesday at his home.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Luke Church of Christ with Dr. L. D. Melvin officiating. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery.
He was born Nov. 9, 1916, to the late Isaiah and Susan C. Faison Kornegay.
Mr. Kornegay was an avid farmer and was known as the "vegetable man". He also worked in the dietary department at O'Berry Center and retired from there at the age of 65.
He was a member of St. Luke Church of Christ Church. He previously served as Sunday school superintendent for 35 years and church treasurer. He also served on the church deacon board and was a member of the senior choir.
He is survived by his wife, Ethel Mae Oates Kornegay; children, Leroy Kornegay of Germany, Charles Kornegay and Carlton Gene Kornegay of Dudley, Joseph Oates of New York, Tyrone Oates of Goldsboro, Henry Oates of the home and Danielle Kennon of North Carolina; 39 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
The viewing will be held today from 4 to 8 p.m. at Garris Funeral Home in Mount Olive. The family will be present from 7 to 8 p.m. to receive friends and at other times at the home.
