DR. HUBERT SCOTT
April 26, 1944-July 28, 2006
Dr. Hubert Donovan "Don" Scott, 62, died Friday at his home.
He was born in Tarboro to parents, Hubert Cox and Mozelle Fitzgerald Scott.
Don graduated from North Carolina State University with a bachelor's degree in crop science in 1966 and a master's degree in soil science in 1968. He received his doctorate from the University of Kentucky in 1971 in the field of soil physics.
Don's career in guiding students in their academic endeavors as a university professor began at the Fayetteville campus of the University of Arkansas in December of 1971. Over his 30 years of service, he was the major professor of 19 students who obtained their master's degrees, 10 students who obtained their Doctor of Philosophy degrees and six postdoctoral fellows and visitors. He taught numerous undergraduate and graduate level courses. In 2000, he authored a textbook "Soil Physics: Agricultural and Environmental Applications" used for upper level undergraduates and graduate students.
While mentoring students was his first love and passion in his career, he also excelled in research in the areas of soil physics and soil and water conservation pertaining to the Mississippi Delta of the state of Arkansas. He was a fellow in both the Soil Science Society of America and the American Society of Agronomy and received several awards and honorary positions in recognition of his research contributions.
Upon his return to the state of North Carolina in January of 2002, he undertook another challenge as director of the Agribusiness Center at Mount Olive College in Mount Olive, N.C. Under his leadership, the center offered outreach programs to the agribusiness community in such areas as computer workshops and leadership enrichment seminars. He also spearheaded the development of the academic curriculum leading to a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Applied Science degree.
Don had a passion to teach Sunday School classes to a wide range of adult ages while a member of First Baptist Church in Fayetteville, Ark., and as a member of First Baptist Church, Goldsboro. He served as a deacon in both churches and loved the Lord.
Funeral services to celebrate the life of Dr. Scott will be 2 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church, Goldsboro, with Dr. Glenn Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in the Kenly Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Janice Sanford Scott; sons, Michael Donovan Scott of Durham and Mark Fitzgerald Scott of Raleigh; his mother, Mozelle Fitzgerald Scott of Kenly; his brother, Howard F. Scott and wife, Denise D. Scott, of Kenly; his sisters, Judith Scott Pate and her husband, James H. Pate, of Chesapeake, Va., and Rachel Scott Crawford and her husband, Vann Crawford, of Greensboro and their daughters, Ashley and Rebecca; his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Norman Sanford of Fayetteville, Ark.; and his brother and sister-in-law, David Charles and Janice Shea Sanford of Fayetteville, Ark., and their daughter, Staci Sanford Rankin, and sons, Damon Charles Sanford, and Jason Robb Sanford and his wife, Lisa Sanford, all of Fayetteville, Ark.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the H. Don Scott Agribusiness Scholarship Fund at Mount Olive College, 634 Henderson St., Mount Olive, N.C. 28365
The family will receive friends today from 6 until 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.
