Irene Thornton Griffin, 100, died Thursday at the Brian Center.
Mrs. Griffin was born in Sampson County on Jan. 25, 1905, to the late Benjamin Franklin Thornton and Julia Weaver Thornton. She was the oldest member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. Mrs. Griffin and her husband, the late Lloyd Bennett Griffin, founded Griffin's Barbecue in Goldsboro.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Willow Dale Cemetery. Dr. Homer Morris and the Rev. Thurman Horney will officiate.
Mrs. Griffin is survived by her daughter, Susan G. Thompson of Lorena, Texas; and her grandchildren, Susan Orgillio, Renee Dauphin, Lloyd Thompson and Ken Thompson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, 610 N. William St., Goldsboro, N.C., 27530.
The family will receive friends following the service at the graveside.
Arrangements are with Seymour Funeral Home.
