MARY FINAN
RALEIGH -- Mary Alice Weathers Finan, 84, died Thursday, May 19, 2005, at Morningside Assisted Living Center.
She was born July 3, 1920 in Lizard Lick, N.C., and was the daughter of the late Ivan McGruder Weathers and Carrie Foy Rhodes Weathers. She graduated from Wendell High School and Hardbarger's Business College. She worked as a secretary and book keeper for several businesses and especially enjoyed her years working for Burley Mitchell Insurance Company.
Mary married Jack Finan on September 19, 1942, and through her husband's service as an officer in the US Army they lived in Cape Cod, Mass.; Tokyo, Japan; Dothan, Ala.; and Ft. Bragg, before settling in Raleigh in 1953.
She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and a longtime member of the Willing Workers Sunday School class there. She also served as an Encourager at the church. Her other community activities included assisting with English language classes for family members of NC State University international students through Grace Lutheran church.
Mary loved to play bridge, cheering on the Atlanta Braves, crossword puzzles, and bowling. Most of all, she found her joy in being a loving daughter, wife, mother and grandmother.
The day before her death, she told her loved ones she was ready to "go home" and spent much of her final day socializing with her friends and the staff at Morningside and telling them how much she loved them before she peacefully passed away. She lived a loving Christian life and served as a wonderful example for her children, her grandchildren and her many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, John Joseph (Jack) Finan.
She is survived by one son, Tim Finan of Goldsboro and wife, Dianne Creech Finan; two daughters, Mary Pauline (Polly) Finan Laubinger of Raleigh, and Jeanne Finan and husband, Tom Eshelman of Valle Crucis.
She is also survived by five grandchildren that she adored, Benares Finan-Eshelman of New Bedford, Mass., Jody Eamonn and wife, Natalie of Drake, Co., Matthew Finan of Myrtle Beach, Patrick Finan of Wilmington, and Liberty Laubinger of Raleigh. Mrs. Finan is also survived by one great-grandson, Cedar Eamonn of Drake, Co. In addition, she is survived by one beloved step-grandchild, Breeze Laubinger Foster and husband, Dan, and their children, Autumn and Micah, all of Edgewood, Md.
The family will greet visitors at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh, Sunday (today) May 22 from 4 until 6 p.m. The funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, May 23, at Emmanuel Baptist Church, Raleigh, with the graveside service following at Gethsemane Gardens in Zebulon. The Rev. Leon Bizzell will conduct the services.
