LEO C. SUMMERLIN
Mr. Leo Conrad Summerlin, 84, died Thursday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
Mr. Summerlin was born in Wayne County and was the son of the late Silas Summerlin and Eusebia Ruth Sasser Summerlin. He was raised in the Nahunta Community by his grandparents, the late Levi Beverly and Loma Sasser, and was married for 61 years to Maxine Hazelip Summerlin, who preceded him in death on March 2, 2005.
Mr. Summerlin retired from Carolina Power and Light after 35 years as a dedicated lineman. He was very proud and quick to point out many locations around Wayne County where he helped install the first power lines.
Mr. Summerlin had been active at New Hope School and served as PTA president.
He had been a member of Daniels Memorial United Methodist Church for many years. Mr. Summerlin served the Lord in many jobs in the church and loved his church family. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the Pacific.
Funeral services will be held today at 3 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Glenn Everett officiating. Burial will follow in Willow Dale Cemetery.
Mr. Summerlin is survived by his daughters, Linda Jordan of Henderson, Nev., and Elizabeth Ann Gufford and husband Ben of Goldsboro; six grandchildren, Melissa Hill of Dallas, Texas, Ashley Odom of Pleasanton, Calif., Jennifer Long of Reno, Nev., Jeanyne Ward of Reno, Nev., Brigitta Strauch of Wilson, and Ben Gufford Jr. of Goldsboro; and one great-grandchild, Augusta Ward of Reno, Nev. He is also survived by a special church grandchild, Daniel Chewning and the Larry Chewning Family.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Bethany Summerlin and a son, Larry Conrad Summerlin. He was also preceded in death by his first cousins with whom he was raised as brother and sister, Howell Sasser, Woodrow Sasser, Rueben Sasser, Linwood Sasser, J.B. Sasser, Perrine Bunn and Pearl Crawford.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 2402 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534; or to Daniels Memorial United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 2803 E. Ash Street, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.
The family will receive friends today from 1 until 2:30 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at the home of Ann and Ben Gufford, 171 Charlie Braswell Road, Goldsboro.
