MARTHA LENNON
OAK ISLAND -- Martha Cary Eppes Lennon, 88, of 2402 W. Yacht Drive, formerly of Wayne County, died Monday at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center.
She was a native of Greenville, S.C., and was the daughter of the late James Frank and Vena Adams Eppes. During World War II, she was known for knitting one item per week for the enlisted men. She traveled the world and, after many moves, settled on Oak Island in 1976. She was a charter member of Oak Island Presbyterian Church and was active in its women's group and fund-raising for Hospice.
Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Crom Lennon of the home; a daughter, Lucy Shearer of Lake Norman; a son, William Lennon; one brother, James Albert Eppes of Greenville, S.C.; a sister, Mary Ann Eppes McCullough of Greenville, S.C. and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family received friends on Wednesday evening from 6 until 8 at Peacock-Newnam Funeral & Cremation Service in Southport.
Private interment will be at a later date.
A celebration of Mrs. Lennon's life will be held on June 21 at 11 a.m. at Oak Island Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Oak Island Presbyterian Church or to Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center.
