CECIL SHACKELFORD

WALSTONBURG -- Walter Cecil Shackelford, of 1395 Washington Branch Church Road, died Sunday at his home.

A native of Greene County, he was born October 22, 1929, the eldest son of the late Walter Linwood and Verna Mae Shackelford. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was a retired farmer and tobacconist, having worked on the surrounding tobacco markets for many years. He also retired as a rural mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service and had most recently served as an Inspector for the Greene County Housing Authority.

Mr. Shackelford was an active member of Free Union Free Will Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and had held various church offices. He also was a member of the Snow Hill American Legion Shirley Hill Post #94, was a Mason and was a member of Radiance Lodge #132.

The funeral will be held today at 7 p.m. at Free Union F.W.B. Church with Reverend Alan Joyner, Reverend Tony Glass and Reverend Philip Wood officiating. A private committal service will be held on Wednesday at the Snow Hill Cemetery with American Legion Honors.

Mr. Shackelford is survived by his wife, Ernestine Merritt Shackelford of the home; children, Gregory Shackelford and wife, Grene of Kinston, Kathy Shackelford Foster and husband, Wayne of Burlington and Jerry Lynn Shackelford of Sanford; grandchildren, Christina Shackelford and Jeffrey Shackelford both of Kinston; a sister, Mary Holloman of Grimesland; and brothers, Marvin Shackelford of Farmville and Larry Shackelford of Asheboro.

The family will receive friends tonight immediately following the service and other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, consider memorials to the Free Union F.W.B. Church Layman's League, 2573 Firetower Road, Walstonburg, N.C., 27888.
