Wayne County Crime Stoppers will host its annual gospel sing to raise money in its efforts in fighting crime on Friday.
The event will be at 7 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 204 E. Chestnut St., and includes performances by two Southern gospel groups, Legacy and the King's Messengers.
The harmony group from St. Paul's United Methodist Church will also perform.
The gospel sing is free and open to the public, and an offering will be taken with all the money going to the Crime Stoppers rewards program.
"When citizens support Crime Stoppers, they support all local law enforcement," said Stephanie Brown, Wayne County Crime Stoppers executive director.
The event is dedicated to the late Judge Tim Finan, who dedicated years of service and support to the Crime Stoppers program.
In 2007, Finan was appointed by former Gov. Mike Easley as a district court judge for Wayne, Greene and Lenoir counties.
The Crime Stoppers program allows citizens to provide information about crimes without identifying themselves.
Cash rewards are offered to callers who provide information that leads to felony arrest. Callers remain anonymous and never have to give their personal information.
Formed in November 1982, the program has experienced tremendous growth and has offered additional resources to help solve crime.
Over the years, $2 million in stolen property has been recovered, $8 million in illegal drugs and 62 murders and 1,200 fugitives have been captured. Crime Stoppers has assisted in clearing 7,500 cases and 5,600 arrests.
Wayne County Crime Stoppers is a nonprofit that is funded by private donations.
