Applications sought for emergency food, shelter

The application period is open for governmental agencies and nonprofit organizations to apply for a share of Wayne County's Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds.
Local human service agencies and charities may apply through July 20 for a portion of the $56,950 in federal funds that Wayne County has been awarded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency for the program.
Qualified local, governmental, or private voluntary organizations chosen to receive funds must be a nonprofit, have an audit if requesting funding in excess of $50,000, practice nondiscrimination, have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food, shelter and utility assistance or rent assistance programs and have a voluntary board if they are a private voluntary organization.
Also, they must provide a valid email address for their agency contact, be able to certify that their agency is not debarred or suspended from receiving federal funds, and provide their agency's DUNS number, a unique nine-digit sequence recognized as the universal standard for identifying and keeping track of over 100 million businesses worldwide.
Applications are available to qualifying agencies only.
To prevent duplication of funded services, allocations will be awarded as supplements to current services and not as startup funding.
Applications will be available at the United Way of Wayne County, 2803 Cashwell Drive, starting Monday. Applications must be returned and fully completed to United Way no later than Friday, July 20, at 4 p.m.
In order to be considered, applicants are required to attend the meeting of the Local Emergency Food and Shelter Board on Friday, July 27, at 8 a.m. at the United Way. Applicants will be notified of their appointment time.
While the United Way of Wayne County administers the local EFSP funds, decisions regarding disbursement are made by a local board comprised of representatives of organizations that are concerned about or have a responsibility for the hungry and homeless in their communities.
In Phase 34, the 2016-2017 spending period, the program assisted local charities in providing emergency assistance in the form of meals, shelter, utility, and rent assistance to Wayne County residents. The Phase 35 spending period is from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31.
