Calling all Wayne County dogs for the first ever pie eating competition. It will be held Saturday at noon at Pet Supplies Plus on Berkeley Boulevard.
The "pie" will actually be 100 percent canned pumpkin spooned into a small pie tin, the amount to be determined by the size of the dog. For example, a small dog might get a couple tablespoons of pumpkin, while a large dog might get a bigger amount, maybe nine tablespoons, said store team leader Lindsey Clark.
Store employees will "make" the pies about 15 minutes before the competition begins. Each will be decorated with little dog treats.
"There will be different groups of dogs depending on their size," Clark said. "We will put the pie tins down for them and a store team member will time it and another will judge for prizes."
Prizes will be given for the fastest eater, messiest eater and cleanest eater. Winners will receive gift cards to Pet Supplies Plus.
"Pumpkin is goof for dogs and for their digestive systems," Clark said. "It aids in upset tummies and things like that. And if they have diarrhea, it helps calm that down, too."
If a dog is food aggressive, it can still have a pie, but won't be put near the other dogs in the competition.
"Every dog that comes will get a pie," Clark said.
"Our goal is to get as many dogs in here that want to participate. We'd like to have at least 20.
"This is a great fun activity to bring people and their dogs together.
"It's a fun family day and also pet friendly."
