Wayne County Public Schools superintendent Dr. Michael Dunsmore will continue to lead WCPS, after the Duval County school board in Florida selected Diana Greene to lead the district Friday.

Greene, the leader of Manatee County schools, was the only Florida superintendent left in the running after the Duval board narrowed the field to three May 14. She did not receive a single elimination vote as the Duval board shortened its list -- Dunsmore received three.

During a special called meeting earlier in the day Friday, the Wayne County Board of Education voted 4-3 to extend Dunsmore's contract until June 30, 2021, without having heard the results from Duval County.

Chairman Patricia Burden and board members Jennifer Strickland, Chris West and Arnold Flowers voted to extend Dunsmore's contract, while board members Rick Pridgen, Len Henderson and Raymond Smith voted against the motion.

Pridgen and Henderson said at the time that waiting for the results from Duval County would have been prudent before making a decision on Dunsmore's continued employment.
