Wayne County commissioners will discuss their capital improvement plan during a workshop this morning.

"We are doing our budget, and that is why you need to look at your capital improvement plan, too," commission Chairman Bill Pate said.

The meeting will get underway with an 8 a.m. agenda briefing followed by the formal session at 9 a.m.

Both will be held in the commissioners' meeting room on the fourth floor of the Wayne County Courthouse Annex.

The county received a little bit of a reprieve from the school issues it faces, Pate said.

However, commissioners may still need to consider moving some things around and delaying others, he said.

One factor that will figure into that process will be construction costs that have skyrocketed, Pate said.

"And we still may try to make a decision on what we are going to do at the old County Office Building, about whether we are going to build a new one or remodel," he said.

That is what the capital improvement plan is going to be about, Pate said.

Sometimes things happen, and the board has to act right then, including shifting projects around, he said.

"We just want to make sure with this budget that our priorities are set so we will know what we are doing going forward," Pate said. "You have got to have a plan."

Pate said he does not anticipate the workshop lasting very long.

Also, Pate said he expects the board will attempt to attach a dollar figure to the plan in order to have at least a ballpark idea of what everything is going to cost.

"It just ain't cheap," he said.

In other business, commissioners will consider motions to approve:

• A proclamation for Older Americans Month.

• A proclamation for Mental Health Awareness Month.

• Hiring Smith-Gardner for landfill engineering services.

Also on the agenda:

• Linda Harper will make a presentation on the Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committee and the Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee.

• James Wade, venue director and general manager of The Maxwell Center, will update commissioners on the center.

Consent agenda items include applications for the present use tax relief program and budget amendments. Public comments will start at 9:05 a.m. Speakers will have four minutes to comment on their topic of choice.
