The newly opened, 62-acre athletic complex on Oak Forest Road now bears the name of a Goldsboro-based charitable organization.

The Goldsboro City Council approved naming the complex the Bryan Multi-Sports Complex Monday, following a $300,000 naming rights donation to the city from the R.A. Bryan Foundation.

"The Bryans have always been a very charitable family, not only in the city and county but also in North Carolina," said Mayor Chuck Allen. "They thought it was a great thing for our community and something, I think, they would be proud to have their name on.

"They've always been supportive of the military and Seymour Johnson (Air Force Base) and I'm sure they like that partnership as well."

The Bryan family also owns the Goldsboro-based T.A. Loving Co., and the R.A. Bryan Foundation has supported various organizations locally and across the state, including N.C. State and Vidant Medical Center, Allen said.

"The Bryan family and the T.A. Loving Co. are just unbelievable givers to the community," Allen said.

The R.A. Bryan Foundation has secured naming rights for the sports complex for the next 15 years and the city donation will span over the next 10 years. The majority of the donation will be used to pay for a splash pad at the complex, Allen said.

The Bryan Multi-Sports Complex, which opened alongside Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in March, includes eight athletic fields, including two with artificial turf.

Also during the meeting, the council:

* Tabled a rezoning request for a 0.85-acre property on North Berkeley Boulevard and Langston Drive to allow the addition of a car wash. The applicant, Berkeley Realty Holdings, asked city officials to defer the request another two weeks.

* Approved a contract change order for $56,775 with Three Deuces for the removal of vegetative debris in sections of Stoney Creek and the Little River.

* Approved an additional $23,021 cost for a variety of improvements at the former W.A. Foster Center, on Leslie Street, which is being renovated by Billy Brock Construction under a $118,390 contract.

* Discussed an interest in naming the former W.A. Foster Center to the T.C. Coley Community Center. Coley was a city parks and recreation leader of the center in the early 1980s, said Scott Barnard, Goldsboro parks and recreation director.

* Approved a $2.3 million installment-financing agreement with Banc of America Public Capital Corp. for the purchase of 35 vehicles.

* Approved a $50,000 contract with the Wooten Co. to create a preliminary engineering report and environmental assessment for water and wastewater system improvements.

* Set a May 21 public hearing for the proposed adoption of the revised Flood Damage Prevention Ordinance.

* Recognized Goldsboro Police Department Sgt. Dale Foster for 26 years of service and GPD Capt. Teresa Cox more than 25 years of service. Foster and Cox retire on May 1.
