Human Relations Awards Banquet slated for Friday

People making a difference in the community will be recognized during the 44th Human Relations Awards Banquet Friday.
The event will be held at the Goldsboro Event Center, at 1501 S. Slocumb St., starting at 6:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased for $10 at the Goldsboro Community Relations office, in City Hall, at 214 N. Center St., and at the door, if seats are still available.
During the banquet, the Commission on Community Affairs will present three main awards, the Individual Award, Civic Organization Award and Business/Industry Award, to people who have worked to create a stronger, more unified community.
The winners of the 14th annual poster and essay contests will also be presented to Wayne County school children.
"The banquet will continue with the running goal and commitment to promote community building, inclusiveness, and togetherness within Goldsboro, Wayne County," said Shycole Simpson-Carter, Goldsboro community relations director.
"This will also be our opportunity to recognize publicly the youth, leaders, advocates, role models, risk-takers, and innovators who make Goldsboro, Wayne County a better place."
Four area high school chorus or vocal ensemble groups will also perform, with each showcasing the link between African culture and modern-day African-American hymnals or spirituals.
The groups will also share information about the origin and cultural significance of each selection, Simpson-Carter said.
The annual Human Relations Awards Banquet is usually held in February, during Black History Month, but was postponed to March this year.
The event, a partnership between the city of Goldsboro and Wayne County, remains focused on promoting unity, under the theme "Where Do We Go From Here ... Growing Goldsboro/ Wayne County Together."
"We are better together to overcome the difference in our communities with shared profound integrity, courage, and deep faith in the possibility to grow Goldsboro/Wayne County together," Simpson-Carter said.
